Simply Jesus: Finding God In The Ordinary

August 4, 2026
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It’s the dog days of summer in Atlanta. Hot, humid & rainy. Not exactly life-giving weather for this autumn-loving girl.

A lull has settled over me. I’ve found myself bobbing along a little aimlessly, waiting for a breeze to blow, the clouds to lift, the humidity to subside—waiting for a reprieve.

Then, out of nowhere, a slight breeze begins to stir. The air feels lighter. For a moment the heaviness lifts, reminding me that seasons do change. After all, sometimes all it takes is one unexpected breath of fresh air to awaken expectancy.

Back in May, I sensed the Lord inviting me to step away from writing for the summer. I imagined long walks, books, prayer, quiet mornings, and plenty of time to listen. But instead, reality looked different; there were a few walks, some prayer, less contemplation than I’d imagined, and suddenly the summer was gone.

When Reality Looked Different

So that brings me to this week’s blog, the first since May.

I must be honest—I don’t feel particularly inspired. The words aren’t flowing. They aren’t flying onto the page. So, when I’m not inspired, I oftentimes go to music so that it can speak to my heart in the ways that few other things can.

Simply Jesus

“Simply Jesus,” By Amanda Cook and Aaron Williams, is the song that’s playing. It goes like this:

Everything I searched for
Everything I longed for
Everything I wanted
Is right here with you

There is nothing missing
There is nothing absent
Everything I wanted
Is right here with You

Oh Simply Jesus

Maybe I spent the summer looking for inspiration as though it were something waiting “out there”—a beautiful landscape, a profound experience, a quiet retreat, a perfect moment with God. But Jesus was never waiting somewhere else. He was already here, with me, beside me, and in front of me.

I think I forgot that everything, every little thing—a deep breath of the morning air, the birds chirping their song, a warm cup of tea, a text from a child, a walk with my husband, is simply Jesus right in front of me.

Maybe it really is that simple.

You’re the focus. You’re the center. It all belongs to You. Every moment. Every summit
It all leads back to You.

Maybe it really is “Simply Jesus.”

I went looking for inspiration, only to realize it had been sitting beside me all along.

Scriptures To Sit With

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you…God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:25-26
