“Like a bird that is far from its nest is a man who is far from his home.” (Proverbs 27:8)
A Glimpse of Freedom
If there is one creature that captivates me more than any other, it’s a large, winged bird. As the birds soar across the land, sweep through valleys, perch high in the treetops, or glide effortlessly on the wind, something in me lifts. My imagination rises with them, and the eyes of my heart glimpse freedom.
They seem to float freely across the land; elegance precedes them, and their majestic appearance captivates anyone who watches. Their endurance and perseverance amaze me.
Finding a Home
Some birds fly for months before landing as they migrate to new places. Yet every bird returns somewhere to rest, restore, and shelter—whether among branches, in tree hollows, along the ground, or upon the water. Every bird has a place it calls home.
Why the Temporal Can’t Hold Us
We, too, migrate—moving from place to place, venture to venture, hoping that the next activity, relationship, or new fascination will somehow satisfy. Some of us spend years flying from one thing to the next, searching for a sanctuary, only to feel disappointed when it doesn’t deliver. What is temporary will never have the capacity to satisfy our deep longing for the eternal.
Dwelling in the Father’s Presence
Home is not found in a person, a place, a possession, or, least of all, a fad. It is only found in the eternal. Home is in the presence of our Abba, Father. When our hearts find rest in Him, we discover freedom, peace, and stillness—no matter what is happening to us or around us.
“My people will live in peaceful dwelling places in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.” (Isaiah 32:18)
How will you know you’re home?
- Peace replaces anxiety and worry.
- Stillness replaces striving and proving.
- Love replaces abandonment and loneliness.
- Presence replaces the ache of searching.
If you need rest from life—from the miles of flying—and you are weary, I invite you to ask the Lord to show you a place of rest. Close your eyes and imagine yourself with Him, the One who offers love, peace, refuge, protection, safety, provision, and a place to call home. You and I are always welcome in His presence. There is nothing we need to “do” to sit with the Lord. In fact, Abba delights in being with us.
