Holy In-Between

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The holy in-between is the space that exists between what is revealed and what remains unseen, between what is hoped for and what is still hidden. In other words, faith.

Faith Between What Is Seen and Unseen

I often find myself living in this holy in-between. Waiting. Praying. Hoping to see more clearly, and wanting to understand what God is doing and when clarity will come. It is the place where questions linger, answers lag, and where certainty feels just out of reach.

Yet the in-between is not meant to resolve everything. It is not the space for answers. It is the space for growth. This is where faith stretches, where hope learns patience, where love deepens, quietly and often unnoticed.

A Season With a Purpose

The holy in-between is always a season. And like all seasons, it has a beginning, a middle, and an end—each with its own purpose, even if we cannot name it while we are inside it.

Sometimes the purpose of the in-between is:

  • preparation—like building an ark before a single drop of rain has fallen.
  • purification—like wandering through the desert, where comforts are stripped away and dependence on God is slowly relearned.
  • suffering—the kind that refines us, humbles us, teaches compassion for others, and dependence on God.
  • waiting—sitting in the boat while the storm rages, unsure if the wind will calm or the waves will overwhelm.

And sometimes, though we cannot yet see it, the in-between is leading toward resurrection—toward the moment when we will step out of the “tomb” and into new life.

What Sustains Us Here

What sustains us through every one of these seasons is faith. Faith does not eliminate uncertainty, but it keeps us hopeful within it. It reminds us that God is present even when we don’t hear Him. And that God is near, even when we don’t feel Him. Faith assures us that this season—however long or heavy—will not last forever; no season does.

As these final days of the year unfold, before the new year rushes in with its plans, expectations, and goals, I pray that this in-between time draws you closer to what lies in the holy in-between: God himself.

May the Lord draw you into greater trust, patience, and love.

And may you discover that even here—in the in-between—God is at work, forming something new within you.

  1. Such a powerful reminder that faith grows in the waiting. Your words gently invite trust where answers are still forming. I’m grateful for how you point hearts back to God in the in-between.

  2. Good one Leslie. Happy New Year to you and your family. Your reflection is a very good description of what someone I have read called liminal space. A threshold. A doorway that we a passing through although we do not usual know when we are through it until later. Thanks for the reminder that the spiritual journey is mostly out of our control and is not an “on-demand” event. We just have to stay open to God’s grace working in and through us. Easily said for sure. Again, I am enjoying your blog. Blessings in the New Year
