Last week’s blog ended with a simple prayer:
Search me.
Show me.
And lead me.
They are easy words to pray. But what happens when God answers?
Search My Heart
What happens when God searches our hearts and begins to uncover the places where He wants to speak truth and life? Do we recognize His answer? Can we hear His whisper within our souls, or discern His voice in the words of another person?
“Every way may appear right in our own eyes, but the Lord examines the heart.” Proverbs 21:2
Our own ways often seem right to us. We understand our choices, reactions, and motives through the lens of our experiences. Yet the Lord sees beneath what is visible. He knows not only what we do, but why we do it. He understands the fears, wounds, desires, and assumptions quietly influencing us.
When we pray, “Search me,” we invite God into those deeper, sometimes hidden places.
Show Me
Are we willing to hear what the Lord has to say, especially when He speaks through those closest to us?
I must be honest: many times, I reject what I am hearing. Receiving “feedback,” as we call it today, can quickly put us in a defensive posture. We become battle-ready, prepared to explain ourselves and shield our hearts from observations, suggestions, or advice. But what if the Lord is using someone else’s words to show us something He wants to address? After all, didn’t we ask Him to search us?
“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…” Psalm 95:7-8
What Lies Beneath
Because of the way we grew up, the experiences that shaped our perspectives, and the filters through which we see the world, we cannot always interpret our own hearts accurately. We may recognize our actions without understanding what lies beneath them. We may see the reaction but remain unaware of the fear, insecurity, pride, or pain driving it. However, the Lord sees what we cannot. In His mercy, He brings light to what we do not yet understand.
Recognize His Voice
He may reveal these things through Scripture, spiritual reading, music, prayer, circumstances, or the words of another person. Sometimes His voice comes as a quiet thought that settles into our hearts. At other times, it arrives through words we would rather dismiss. Not every observation someone makes about us is necessarily from God. We must bring what we hear to Him and ask for guidance and discernment. But neither should we reject uncomfortable words simply because they are uncomfortable. Sometimes discomfort is an invitation to listen more closely.
Often, the Lord’s whispers remain with us. They resurface in prayer or return to our thoughts throughout the day, quietly working their way into our interior lives, awakening us to our need for change.
And Lead Me
Change is something I have to get used to. I tend to drive the same routes, keep my routines relatively constant, and crave predictability. That may be part of being human. We find comfort in what is familiar, even when the familiar is no longer helping us grow.
Recognizing where the Lord wants to transform our hearts is part of the spiritual journey. Allowing Him to lead us in new ways brings healing and restoration. When He reveals something in our hearts, it may take longer than we’d like to sort it out, but temperance, prudence, and endurance all help with this part of the spiritual walk. Self-awareness is a process, and I’ve come to learn it’s much slower than I’d like.
Grace to Change
Transformation is all about love and grace.
Thankfully, God does not merely point out our faults and then leave us to repair ourselves. When He reveals something in our hearts, He also offers the grace to change it. Why? Because He made us; He loves us; He wants to help us live in the fullness of who He created us to be.
It takes a little courage to ask the Lord to search, show, and lead us. Remember, He is a loving Father who would do anything to see us healed and restored.
A Prayerful Pause
Take a moment to become still in the Lord’s presence.
Ask Him gently:
Lord, is there something in my heart You want me to see?
Is there a word I have resisted because it was difficult to hear?
Is there a reaction, fear, or pattern You want to bring into Your light?
Wait quietly. Don’t rush for an answer.
You can close your eyes and envision yourself with the Lord. Feel free to imagine a special place—be it a garden, a cottage, or the seashore where you would want to spend time with Jesus.
And simply pay attention to what comes to mind.
Search me, Lord.
Show me what I cannot see.
And lead me in Your way.
One Final Note
Remember:
The Lord convicts;
He does not condemn.
Condemnation says,
“Look what is wrong with you.”
Conviction says,
“This is where I want to heal and free you.”
Self-criticism leaves us staring at ourselves.
Grace turns our eyes toward Jesus.
