A Living Tapestry

A Story Woven in Thread

A tapestry is one of the oldest forms of textile art. They once hung in places of prominence, not only for warmth but to tell a story. Vibrant threads were woven together to form intricate scenes: moments of joy and struggle, celebration and sorrow, the beauty and fragility of human life.

Each tapestry was more than decoration; it was a narrative, a history, held together by countless threads, each necessary and intentional.

The Hidden Work of Weaving

Tapestries are a labor of love. The work itself is slow and hidden. Thread by thread, color by color, the weaver moves back and forth across a loom, pulling each strand through a foundation of tightly stretched threads. It is labor-intensive, requiring patience, precision, perseverance, and vision.

The process is slow, intentional, and often unseen. And yet, in time, something remarkable emerges: a masterpiece we are only occasionally able to glimpse.

The Master Weaver

The Lord, the Master Weaver, works in much the same way. He weaves the threads of our lives, moments we understand and moments we don’t, relationships that shape us, and seasons that stretch us. He is careful and deliberate, never pulling too tightly, never wasting a single strand.

There are seasons when all we see are loose threads and unfinished patterns, and we can’t make out the story. But God sees the whole tapestry.

A Gathering of Threads

A couple of weeks ago, I caught a glimpse of that larger design. We gathered to witness our daughter marry the love of her life. In the midst of the celebration, one word kept returning to me: tapestry.

As I took in the sights and sounds, the laughter, the music, the quiet tears, and the not-so-quiet tears, I became aware of something deeper. It wasn’t just a wedding. It was a weaving. A gathering of people from every season of life. Their childhood friends, college roommates, family members, mentors—each one carrying a history, a story, a thread.

And there they were, all together in one place, drawn by love, witnessing a sacred “I do.”

A Glimpse of the Tapestry

What struck me most was not just the beauty of the day but the intricate way so many lives had been woven together over time. Years of friendship. Acts of kindness. Shared experiences. Countless prayers. People who had poured into our daughter and her husband, sometimes in small, unseen ways, now stand as part of something much bigger.

A living tapestry.

And for a brief moment, we were allowed to see it.

  1. I think, Leslie, this is one of your most beautiful posts. I love..seasons that stretch us-
especially when the Lord stretches us towards Him in love and sacrifice. Unknown
to us is that it is always with love that our Savior iniates more growth, always a greater
turning toward Him. We are woven with marriage, in family again and again,
we are woven in friendship, in our faith as we stretch toward others who need our
    presence and support.

Your blog posts make us reflect, give thanks and find stepping stones for the roads ahead. Bless you.

  2. Such a beautiful tapestry of joy and hope and gratitude and love. This tapestry hangs in all our hearts
