I have far from arrived. But I know this—when I am resting in the arms of Abba, Father, where He created me to live, the worries, stresses, and hurts of the world begin to fade. In that resting place, I can allow God to minister to my body, mind, and spirit—and I am refreshed and restored. True rest is always in God.
When Temporary Comforts Fall Short
This week, I’m challenging myself to notice the places in my life where I seek temporary solace or worldly comforts to find ease and rest. Those temporal comforts fade quickly because they cannot bring lasting peace.
True peace and rest are found only when we allow God, the Father, to hold us, so we can remember we are loved, we are not alone, our needs will be provided for, and we are not orphans.
A Promised Peace That Holds Us
This peace and rest are promised to us. God reminds us of this truth throughout Scripture
- “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest…” (Matthew 11:28–29)
- “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14)
- “Do not be anxious about anything…” (Philippians 4:6–7)
- “He makes me lie down in green pastures…” (Psalm 23:2)
- “Yes, my soul, find rest in God…” (Psalm 62:5–6)
- “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace…” (Romans 15:13)
- “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times…” (2 Thessalonians 3:16)
As I sit with these familiar verses, what I hear the Lord saying is: Come to Him. Enter His presence. Surrender our burdens. Let Him lead us. And hope and peace will be ours.
Practice Makes Permanent
Indeed, easier said than done. But like all behaviors we want to change, habits we want to create, or skills we want to improve, we have to be willing to practice, over and over.
Perhaps this week, we can accept the Lord’s invitation to come to Him and rest, remembering that we have a home, we are beloved children of Abba, and there—in His arms—we find the rest that truly satisfies.
Only then will it be well with our souls.
Reflection:
Where in my life am I seeking temporary comfort, and what might it look like to leave that comfort for the arms of Abba this week?

This was a timely message and helps confirm and reinforce some things in my life.
Had been noticing more that I do go to worldly comforts in times of stress. Lately, God has been getting me to notice and take action.
He did this by making those “comforts” become uncomfortable and unacceptable to me.
One example is my scrolling through FB reels watching reels on horses. But lately there are too many Ads, literal witchcraft ads, inappropriate ads, etc. They were evil. To the point I deleted the app.
Replacing with going further into Bible study, painting or walking, cooking.
I have surrendered to God so my actions of being comforted must reflect that yielding. -Donna
Donna, this is so beautiful! What a gentle and loving way our Lord works! I too have found myself looking for comfort from the world, which is so temporary. I know that, but I so often forget. I’ve started a practice of closing my eyes and seeing myself sitting with Jesus, resting my head on His shoulder, and being filled with His peace. It’s so much better than anything else!
